Notes: Lupe Fiasco’s real name is Wasalu Muhammad Jaco and everything I can find suggests that his friends call him “Lu.” Title is a shameless grab from Lupe Fiasco’s “Superstar,” which Patrick performed with Lupe and Matthew Santos at the 2007 MTVu Woodie Awards.

Had you ever noticed that Lupe Fiasco rarely curses? It was really fucking difficult to write a story with a minimal amount of cursing.

Jon has no idea why he watches Beth so much. It’s not that he has a crush on her – she is mindblowingly hot, for sure, but also a little intimidating in a way that Jon isn’t sure he’s ready for. It might be the intimidation that is part of the draw, though. Beth challenges him. Not just “challenges” in terms of making him rethink what he expects from women (although she does) or reconsider his sexuality (he’s aware that he’s straight).

So this year, I'm kind of helping shepherd 14valentines, a writing project/concept that is based on the idea of fandom as a community that is comprised largely of women and our allies and the possibility of relationship there. It's meant to raise awareness and, hopefully, increase participation in groups and issues that directly affect women. 14 Valentines will run for two weeks (14 days) for the first half of February, ending on Valentine's Day, also Vagina Day, Victory Against Violence Day and is in a large part inspired by Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues, and the organization that grew out of that movement, the V-Day foundation.

The mission of 14 Valentine's isn't to solicit money for the cause -- as anybody who has worked at a nonprofit knows, money does not fix all or even some of the problems -- but instead of remind everybody that there is a cause, that it touches each of us every day and that we should embrace the agency we're lucky enough to have and do something good with it. We're all global citizens -- we're a global sisterhood, too. That said, if you want to contribute money to some of the organizations we feature, that's awesome too.

14v was envisioned to be a place that's focused on women, their accomplishments, and the problems we face. Anyone is welcome to participate. To find out more, go to this post.

I would love it if members of my flist wanted to participate or spread the word. If nothing else, keep an eye on the community in early February - there's a lot of cool icons, fic, knitting projects, essays, and projects to be found there.

So, beyond the announcement? I need HELP. I've volunteered to write 4 essays for the community, which aren't going to be a problem, but I also signed up to do 14 days of fic.
